The George Mullins fleet of seven trucks is comprised of Volvo, MAN and Renault, with the emphasis heavily on the Scandinavian marque. We recently bought a small MAN truck, because trainers are more inclined to hire a small truck for their own needs, but the rest of the fleet are Volvo. We have had Volvo FHs since 1996.
The European runs require two drivers, that is one of the reasons we opt for Volvo. They have a very spacious cab and our main dealer, McCarthy's in Kilkenny offer a very good back up service. George is acutely aware where his strengths lie in horse transportation. In that vein he is happy to sub-contract truck maintenance to the main dealers.

Equine transport is a million miles away from any other sector of the haulage industry, therefore when selecting our crew of drivers first and foremost we look for horse-lovers, who happen to be experienced truck drivers.
Another unique feature of our boxes is the pull-out side ramp which slides out from underneath. In traditional boxes the side ramp takes up an additional 6/8" narrowing the horse stalls in this area, causing horses stalled behind the ramp to sweat more during travel. With our specially designed ramps this isn't a problem and the horses enjoy the full width of the horsebox for a more comfortable journey!

George puts great store in presenting the fleet in pristine condition. Each truck is washed and cleaned every day, with special emphasis on the interior of the horsebox. It is part and parcel of the drivers’ job to clean the truck.
The company employs a five-year replacement policy for all vehicles. I find it is cheaper to make the repayments on the truck than pay the maintenance! We sell our trucks privately rather than through trade-ins!

All trucks are fitted with large capacity fuel tanks and are fitted to extremely high specifications, including Globetrotter XL cabs. “Rome for example is an eight-day trip. So you have to make the truck as comfortable as possible. They would all be fitted with air conditioning, air seats and all the latest equipment.”
The quality of the company’s drivers, quality of equipment and a reputation for prompt delivery and collections set the company apart from the competition. Customers can set their clocks by George Mullins Horse Transport, price doesn’t really come into it. Getting the horse from A to B, injury free in a timely manner is what it is all about!
